A very old relief plaque made of copper, with a four-armed depiction of the bodhisattva ‘Avalokiteshvara’, the ‘bodhisattva of empathy’ embossed in deep relief.
The bodhisattva sits in a meditative pose (‘dyana asana’) atop a simple lotus plinth. Three of his arms and hands hold attributes, his fourth hand is stretched out and lies on his right knee, in the gesture of wish-granting (‘varada mudra’), with the palm of the hand pointing forwards. A piece with a very old patina to the front and back, with colour scuffing due to age and remains of earlier gilding.
Dimensions: c. 17 cm x 12 cm. 18th century or earlier. (ME)
