Mixed lot (2 pieces), India: a ‘Nandi’ bull, the steed of the Hindu god Shiva, and a lucky carp (in the form of an incense burner). Both objects cast from brass.
1: The bull ‘Nandi’ is the mythical steed of the Hindu god Shiva. Here he sits on a multi-tiered plinth. In front of Nandi there is an additional symbol of the god Shiva: a lingam (phallus) in a yoni (female genitalia). An upright nozzle stands behind the Nandi, used to fasten the charming object to an altar. Cast in a single piece from brass. An object with very good, old usage patina.
Height: 12.5 cm; width: 6 cm; length: 8.5 cm. 19th century.
2: An incense burner in the shape of a lucky carp. Cast from bronze in a single piece using the waste mould technique. The fish is hollow on the inside, the sides feature latticed openwork, the mouth is open. With two loops for hanging, one at the top and one on the tail fin. Lucky carp like this one were hung up in temples of the sea god across India as votive offerings. An object with beautiful, old, bronze patina with a dark shine.
