An old Buddha head made of light grey sandstone, probably from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. An attractive, rare and very old stone sculpture with large eyes and a meditatively lowered gaze; with the original eyebrows in slight relief, a long flat nose, a small mouth, full lips and typical long ears. The ‘ushnisha’ (topknot of wisdom, or wisdom bump) is clearly visible on the top of the head. With a hairstyle consisting of spiralling curls. The left eyebrow, nose and mouth are chipped, and there are traces of weathering all over the head due to age. Despite this, this Buddha head is a perfect piece thanks to its proportions and style.
Height: 25 cm; width: c. 16.5 cm (the stone head alone); height with base: 34 cm. Between the 10th and the 12th centuries. (ME)
Provenance: Im Auktionshaus DOROTHEUM in Wien, in der Auktion ‘Asiatika’ vom 9. Dezember 1992, Katalog-Nummer 257, erworben. Since then: Austrian private collection.
