An attractive rectangular Indo-Persian lidded box made of hard brown wood. The lid is attached with hinges and has deep relief on the upper side. The relief depicts two lions, one male and one female, fighting (or playing) underneath elaborately crafted leaves and flowers in volutes and spirals. There is a bird in both of the the top two corners. The four long and narrow sides also feature reliefs with leafy tendrils and birds. All the reliefs and the side surfaces of the lid are inlaid with detailed geometric bands made of shiny white, green, black and silver mosaic pieces made of ivory, metal, and probably stone as well. A charming oriental piece with small damage due to age (some minimal pieces broken off at the edges).
Dimensions: 8 cm x 30.5 cm x 12.5 cm. Around 1900. (ME) ASA
