Lot No. 245

Persia (Iran), India: an Indo-Persian lidded jug made of brass, richly engraved with floral motifs.

Persia (Iran), India: an Indo-Persian lidded jug made of brass, richly engraved with floral motifs. - Tribal Art

A bulbous Indo-Persian lidded jug on a protruding, round base. Cast in pieces, hammered, repoussé and richly engraved on the outside with linear patterns and curving floral motifs in continuous bands, squares, medallions and palmettes. The dome-shaped lid, with a hinge, is topped with a bud. The tall, slender spout is finished with a floral rosette. The cast handle features two dragon heads, one at the bottom and one at the top. The base is made of brass-plated copper and attached to a round copper plate at the bottom. There is a small dent to the ‘body’ of the jug, near the handle (at the bottom), but otherwise no damage. The handle is very worn, which suggests that this jug was used over a long period of time. Overall, it is a very decorative object in good condition.
Height: 37 cm. 19th century. (ME)

Provenance: Viennese private collection.
