Mixed lot (4 pieces), Turkey, Ottoman: an embroidered blanket with the symbol of the Sultan (‘tugra’) at its centre, 2 embroidered pouches and a textile object made of metal wires. - Tribal Art

1: a densely embroidered rectangular blanket. The base material is light-coloured woven cotton. The embroidery in various shades of light and dark brown threads (some metal) covers the entire surface. The border which surrounds the blanket has a red background, and is topped with continuous light brown s-shaped curves with dots. The symbol of the Sultan (‘tugra’) embroidered in the central circle is likely to belong to one of the last Ottoman sultans of the 19th century (either Sultan Abdülmecid, 1839–1861, or Sultan Abdülaziz, 1861–1876, or Sultan Abdul Hamid, 1876–1909). The sultanic tugra on the blanket is surrounded by stars, trees and letters. A complete piece, no damage.
Dimensions: 44 cm x 44 cm.

2: a Turkish-Ottoman pouch made of red velvet embroidered with yellow gold metal threads, decorated on all its edges with similar metal threads and sequins. Additionally, a Turkish-Ottoman pouch made of blue velvet, embroidered with silver metal threads. With a blossoming flower in the middle, surrounded by leafy tendrils. Furthermore, an object crafted completely from shiny metal threads. With a centre (a bundle of metal threads secured with wax), a floral medallion on each side, and many hanging long metal threads with sequins. A typical piece of workmanship from the Turkish-Ottoman period. Its use is unknown.
All four objects in this mixed lot: c. 1900. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian collection.
