Lot No. 210

Mixed lot (4 pieces): Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen: four amulet pendants made of silver in the shape of the Hand of Fatima.

Mixed lot (4 pieces): Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen: four amulet pendants made of silver in the shape of the Hand of Fatima. - Tribal Art

The ‘Hand’ is an old pre-Islamic symbol to protect against all evil (e.g. the ‘evil eye’). This old apotropaic sign was taken on by Islam as the Hand of Fatima (also called the ‘khemsa’ or ‘hamsa’ = 5) and integrated into the jewellery tradition.

The present four amulet pendants are all made of good-quality silver. The larger hand, which probably comes from Morocco, is set with four pieces of red coral around a crescent moon with stars surrounded by openwork tendrils. The two central pendants (Tunisia, Libya or Morocco) are each decorated with one piece of coral and a turquoise ornamental stone. On the grounds of its filigree work in thin silver wire, the smallest of the four hand pendants likely comes from a Jewish silversmith in Yemen. The majority of the famous Jewish silversmiths in Yemen, who also worked for Muslims, emigrated to Israel in 1949/1950 (‘Operation Magic Carpet’). Length: 10 cm; 7.6 cm; 7.2 cm; 3.1 cm. Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries. (ME)
