An unusual but visibly very old mask in lightweight, light-coloured wood. Probably of the Kumu or one of the many small tribes in the Ituri Rainforest in northeastern Congo. With a hairstyle consisting of vertical grooves, a straight square nose, rectangular eyes and a ‘laughing’ mouth. Dyed in three colours: a black soot colour (hairstyle and nose), red powdered redwood and white kaolin (the areas around the eyes), and red-white (the offset area around the ‘laughing’ mouth). A highly original, rare piece with two old, small areas with pieces broken off and some scuffing of colour to the front due to age. Otherwise no damage. Very good and old usage patina on the front and back, on the inside.
Height: c. 25 cm; width: 17 cm. Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
