Mixed lot (2 pieces), Lega, Dem. Rep. of Congo: two Lega necklaces from eastern Congo.
1: A necklace with 13 carved, pierced old ivory spikes in a typical Lega shape, probably strung secondarily (at a later date) on copper wire alongside long black and brown beads in an unknown material (glass? early plastic?). Length: 28 cm (whole chain, folded over); length of the ivory points: from 6.5 cm to 9 cm. Only for important members of the Bwami society.
2: A necklace with six animal teeth (leopard?), hung in a compact fashion below the necklace. To the left and right, alternating large old white and blue glass beads (with a single green bead), threaded onto a twisted fibre string. Length: 22 cm (whole chain, folded over). Only worn by high-ranking members of the Bwami society. All natural parts of both necklaces (ivory spikes and animal teeth) are old, have been used long-term, and bear a corresponding speckled, darkened patina: between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century (the threading with copper wire dates from a later period and is secondary). (ME) ASA
Provenance: South African private collection.
Lit.: ‘A World of Necklaces’ by Anne Leurquin, ill. 130, 136.
