A Mongo seating object that can be used both as a seat (with its upper surface positioned horizontally) or as a backrest to be leant on (when the upper surface is turned onto its side edge). Carved in hard, brown wood and dyed black. With a centrally positioned heavy rectangular foot with chamfered edges and a broad surface above for sitting or leaning on, which narrows down towards both sides. There are rectangular recesses with two struts to the left and right on the upper surface. The rest of the upper surface is decorated with geometric linear patterns crafted in chip-carving relief. There is a crack to the side of the lower, thick foot. Otherwise no damage. A old, characteristic object, with visible traces of usage and partly shiny patina.
Height: c. 23 cm (middle); 24 cm (side); width: 49 cm (seat); depth: 14 cm (middle of seat). First half of the 20th century. (ME)
