1: A heavy anklet or bangle with six grooves encircling the outside. Cast of copper. Used by the Ngata, Kutu and Kela sub-tribes of the Mongo people in central Congo as a pre-numismatic form of currency. According to older literature, in the period from 1900 to 1915 local porters were paid with just one of these copper bangles, known as ‘konga’ or ‘likonga’, for five days’ work.
Height: 8 cm; diameter: c. 10 cm; weight: 1.32 kg.
2: An anklet made of brass with two continuous ridges in relief around the outside. A style used by the Ekonda, Kundu, Bobangi and others within the Mongo tribe in central Congo as primitive money for bride prices and other payments.
Height: c. 6 cm; diameter: 11 cm x 12.5 cm ; weight: 780 g.
3: A bangle of the Mongo and Ngandu. Made of copper, thick, heavy, smooth and flat. With slightly enlarged ends and a subtle ridge in the centre and at the outer edges. Cast and worked. Used within the Mongo tribe in central Congo as primitive money and a pre-numismatic form of currency.
Height: c. 4 cm. Diameter: 14.5 cm x 13 cm (the outside); weight: 1.63 kg.
All three ‘Congo money bracelets’ are in good condition, without appreciable damage. Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries. (ME)
