Luba-Hemba, Dem. Rep. of Congo: a small, female half figure, carved out of bone.
A small amulet figure of bone material. The finely crafted, female half figure has a head in the typical style of the Luba-Hemba, from south-east Congo. With characteristic, backward-sweeping Hemba hairstyle. She holds her breasts in both hands. She wears typical tribal scarification marks on her abdomen, around the accentuated navel. The female torso terminates below with a round plinth carved from the same piece. Minor breaks to the plinth ring. Otherwise no damage. Good shiny patina on the light-brown, darkened bone material.
Height: 7.8 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
