Lot No. 151

Luba-Hemba, Dem. Rep. of Congo: a neckrest with a seated female caryatid.

Luba-Hemba, Dem. Rep. of Congo: a neckrest with a seated female caryatid. - Tribal Art

A very fine and typical neckrest of the Luba-Hemba (subgroup of the Luba) in south-east Congo. Carved from hard wood and coloured black and brown. With a central seated female figure as a caryatid, who at left and right holds the surface of this neckrest with her arms which are bent upwards. Her legs are spread out widely on the base plate. One recognises clearly the typical style of the Luba-Hemba by the hairstyle of the seated woman, which projects far to the back, and by the typical tribal decorative scars on her abdomen. A very charming, small piece with good, shiny usage patina. No damage.
Height: c. 12 cm to 13 cm (margin); width: 13.8 cm; and 8 cm ‘deep’. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
