A typical, but rare mask of the Ngbaka people, carved in lightweight, light-coloured wood, with the characteristic decorative scar stripes on the forehead, nose, temples and chin. The large surfaces of the mask face are black, the recessed, circular borders around the slit, small coffee bean eyes are coloured in white (with kaolin).
A very rare, old piece, with old cracks which were restored through early original repairs by means of black tree resin (visible on the rear), as well as with a small crack to the back rim above. Some age-related colour scuffing to exposed areas (nose, mouth, ears). Otherwise no damage. Very good and, in parts, shiny usage patina, especially at the back, inside.
Height: 30 cm; width: 20 cm. Early 20th century. (ME)
