A round ritual object, probably a rattle, carved from a single piece of wood and dyed black. With three small, seated figures above, who hold their hands in front of their mouths. With a round plinth carved out from the same piece, as well as with many rows of all-round, geometric relief bands. Tightly bound fibre cords are located in a groove beneath the seated figures, on which bundles of rattles made of plant seed halves are hanging (some are torn off and missing due to age). Otherwise no damage. Overall, a very charming, interesting and rare ritual object, with a thick, partially encrusted shiny usage patina, typical of very old items from Cameroon.
Height: 33.5 cm; diameter: 9.5 cm (the base below). Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Private Collection of Prof. Dr. Rudolf Leopold, Vienna.
