Ngere, Ivory Coast, Liberia: a typical mask of the Ngere, with a ‘headband’ and wide protruding ‘nostrils’, set with decorative brass nails.

Ngere, Ivory Coast, Liberia: a typical mask of the Ngere, with a ‘headband’ and wide protruding ‘nostrils’, set with decorative brass nails. - Tribal Art

A characteristic, expressive abstract mask of the Ngere. Carved from hard, heavy wood and coloured in black and white on the front. With typical Ngere forms: a wide projecting, abrupt offset forehead, followed by a thick, semicircular ‘headband’. Beneath, two protruding, slit eyes coloured in white. The large, protruding nose displays two large ‘nostrils’ attached on either side. The mouth, open and rounded, projects noticeably from the surface of the mask face. Forehead, headband and nose are set with large, old decorative nails made of brass. Two nails are missing (lost). Small pieces broken off on the back rim. Otherwise no damage. Nevertheless, with very good, shiny usage patina (also at the back on the inside). A ‘classical’ Ngere mask, as it should be.
Height: 29 cm; width: c. 22 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Purchased in Paris around 1973; currently: Austrian private collection.

Lit.: ‘Encyclopedia of African Art and Culture’ by K.-F. Schädler, ill. p. 457.
