Mende, Sierra Leone: a standing female figure, with pointed plaited coiffure.
A standing female figure made of lightweight, light-coloured wood, dyed black. The depicted woman displays a pointed hairstyle of numerous plaits pulled together, and a row of bulges on her neck – just as depicted on the famous helmet masks (‘sowei masks’) of the women’s association ‘sande’ (or ‘bundu’) amongst the Mende. Additionally, the woman displays extensive decorative scarification marks on her chest and back. A charming piece with good, old patina and no damage.
