Lot No. 21

Lobi, Burkina Faso: a three-legged stool, which was used as a seat as well as a weapon (club).

Lobi, Burkina Faso: a three-legged stool, which was used as a seat as well as a weapon (club). - Tribal Art

A three-legged type of stool, for the men of the Lobi. Such stools were carried over the left shoulder while walking, and served as a practical multi-purpose object:
1: one could sit on it (as with any stool).

2: in an emergency, this stool type with long ‘handle’ could be used as a club for beating mightily.

3: when one encountered older men, one knocked the stool deferentially on the ground as a sign of respect. The present three-legged stool of the Lobi, of hard wood, is a visibly old piece. With a few minimal cracks due to age at the end of the long ‘handle’.

Otherwise no damage and a good, shiny, usage patina from protracted use.
Height: 13.5 cm; length: 86 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Private Collection of Prof. Dr. Rudolf Leopold, Vienna.

Lit.: ‘Afrikanische Sitze’ by Sandro Bocola, ill. 25.
