Bedja, - Tribal Art

Sudan: an old round shield made of leather (probably of elephant, hippopotamus or buffalo skin), with large, central shield boss.
An old round shield made of leather (probably of elephant, hippopotamus or buffalo skin), with large, central shield boss. Behind the shield boss on the reverse of the shield there is a thick handle made of leather, attached to the shield by means of leather strips. On the outside, on the edge of the shield, two small recesses are found on the opposite sides, for sticking in and carrying spears.

A very old piece, with visible usage patina (on the handle). No damage.

Diameter: c. 54 x 57 cm. Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries. (ME)
