Mixed lot (3 items), - Tribal Art

Sudan, tribe: Beni Amer: a long, old sword of the ‘kaskara’ type, a shortsword and a round amulet box.
1: A long, double-edged sword, called ‘kaskara’ or also ‘crusader type’. With cross-shaped cross guard of iron, round hilt, wrapped with leather bands and with flat, round hilt pommel. Sheath and carrying belt of reddish-brown dyed leather display fine, geometric embossing (stars, moons, lozenges, lines, dots etc.). The belt is additionally decorated with plaited and twisted leather bands. With four stripes of lizard skin. The ‘shoe’ of the sheath, made of sheet iron, must have been added later. Length: 108 cm.
2: A shortsword with double-edged, locally-forged iron blade. The round hilt is covered in dark brown leather, and displays at the upper end an iron point (as tool). With sheath and carrying belt of dark brown coloured leather, with simple, linear geometric embossing. Three stripes of light-coloured lizard skin on the hilt and sheath. This is a type of weapon which also exists amongst the Tuareg in the Sahara. Length: 68 cm.
3: A round amulet box of red-dyed leather, with grooves and broad leather eyelet. For storing Islamic inscribed amulets. With a twisted leather strap for carrying, probably by men on their upper arm.

Width: 7 cm; diameter: c. 4.5 cm.
All 3 objects: Between c. 1900 and the first half of the 20th century. (ME)
