The Tarantella is a light-footed folk dance featuring quick leaps and turns. Thomas Uwins resided in Italy from 1824 to 1831 where he specialised in the portrayal of rural folk scenes. The model for the child was his niece. The Gulf of Salerno is shown in the background. A smaller version of this work is held by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
