Sulu Sea, between Mindanao and Borneo: a large Sulu or Moro kris, with sheath.
The typical Sulu or Moro kris, also called ‘Sundang’, is a type of shortsword from the islands between Mindanao (South Philippines) and Borneo (Kalimantan, Indonesia, Malaysia). In ‘classic’, perfect shape: with a large, lightweight corrugated, double-edged blade (with 7 waves). The blade displays the characteristic forged and engraved decoration of this type. The hilt displays a large, stylised bird’s head and three rings made of white, shiny metal (all made of weak silver alloy), in between bands made of brass. The bivalve wooden sheath is attached with two brass cuffs with engraved edge decorations and a ‘shoe’ made of brass, as well as with bindings made of copper wire. The large, broad ‘boat’ of the sheath displays linear chip-carving embellishments on both sides. A very rare, beautiful and old object. No damage.
