The traditional ‘Wayang kulit’ shadow theatre in Java and Bali includes more than 100 different figures. Among the 5 present, small ‘Wayang kulit’ figures, two depict the popular, large-bellied jester, Semar (or Bagong). Further, a Bathara Indra, the god of the heavens, thunder and storms, with his turban-like, spirally-twisted headdress, a goddess Setyaboma, with a high god’s crown, as well as an unspecified female figure, called Putren in Javanese shadow theatre, who is used for a number of secondary roles. All 5 small-format shadow theatre figures display slight damage resulting from many years of use (colour scuffing).
Height: between 34 cm and 44 cm.
