Toraja, Sulawesi (formerly Celebes): two ‘chest bowls’ made of valuable silver, richly decorated. From a dance costume of the southern Toraja. The dances were danced by men. Very rare.
Two ‘chest bowls’, chased from the finest silver. Richly decorated in round surfaces, bands and in segments, and dense with lines, dots, as well as with leaf and floral tendrils. Such ‘feminine attributes’ belong to the dance costumes of the southern Toraja, where these dances were performed by men. Both of the present, old, ‘silver chest bowls’ are lined and padded with white fabric and cotton on the inside. In the middle, each of the bowls is connected at two points with two glass pearls and a silver pearl on strings. Further strings, decorated with yellow and blue glass pearls, are attached on the left, right and below. The finials, made of bevelled discs of snail shells, make it possible to wrap these female ‘breast bowls’ on the bodies of the male dancers. A rare object, without significant damage and with visibly old, good usage patina. Very rare.
Height: c. 10 cm (each bowl); diameter: c. 17 cm (each bowl).
19th century. (ME)

Austrian private collection.
