Lot No. 225

Burma (Myanmar): an old relief panel that shows a ‘celestial’ dancer (an ‘Apsara’) standing on a sea monster, a ‘Makara’.

Burma (Myanmar): an old relief panel that shows a ‘celestial’ dancer (an ‘Apsara’) standing on a sea monster, a ‘Makara’. - Tribal Art

Probably from a temple or monastery. A relief carved, partly in three dimensions, from hard wood, originally dyed darker. The relief shows a ‘celestial’ dancer, an ‘Apsara’ (a part mythical, part human, part divine being) who stands on a mythical sea monster (‘Makara’), with the body of a snake and the head of a dragon. The ‘Apsara dancer’ wears a tall, winged crown, a long robe with a jacket and she is adorned with moving bands of fabric. Her forearms with hands may have been supplemented at a later date. The ‘Makara’ coils its snake body underneath and spits fire from its open dragon mouth in a dramatic scene. The carefully crafted relief panel must originate from a Burmese temple or monastery. Below it displays some severe, age-related weathering and breakages, as well as an old iron bracket on the left underside. Conversely, only a few, insignificant, small cracks and tears are visible in the upper section. It is overall an interesting narrative piece depicting the ‘eternal battle’ between good and evil.
Height: 96 cm; width: c. 34 cm.
Between the end of the 19th and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
