Lot No. 222

Thailand: a standing Buddha, made of cast bronze and gilded. In Rattanakosin or Bangkok style. 19th century.

Thailand: a standing Buddha, made of cast bronze and gilded. In Rattanakosin or Bangkok style. 19th century. - Tribal Art

A standing, very slender Buddha figure, made of cast bronze, accentuated with black and gilded. Here Buddha stands in lavish court robes, with a tall, winged crown. He is making the ‘protective gesture’ (‘Abhaya Mudra’) with which Buddha wards off all evil and protects people from fear. This very well executed bronze stands on a four-tiered plinth that is round above and octagonal below. It is accentuated with red and black, decorated in parts with small, round mirrored plates, as well as entirely gilded. On the back of the plinth a cast gilded ring can be found that is used to hang this valuable Buddha figure on the wall of a temple. The casting core of the figure is present inside at the bottom. An unusually fine and detailed piece that, apart from colour scuffing to some areas due to age, displays no damage.
Height: 67 cm; width: 17 cm.
Style: Rattanakosin or Bangkok style, 19th century. (ME)

Provenance:
Private collection, Vienna.
