Kurds, probably from Iraq: a large, old belt buckle for men. Crafted from high quality silver and decorated with red and blue glass stones. A rare piece.
Formerly such large, silver belt buckles were part of traditional Kurdish male clothing. The present, old example is crafted in two parts and made of high quality silver. Both halves display the typical paisley shapes and it is closed using a hook-and-eye closure, under the central dome-shaped buckle bearing a large silver sphere. The characteristic decor consists of spirals, soldered silver rhombuses (in the background) and of small, granulated silver spheres arranged in spirals. At the centre of each spiral sits a larger sphere. In the middle of both halves the outer paisley shape is repeated in a more dense granulation and decorated with small, blue glass beads and one large red glass bead. This two-piece object is in excellent condition and displays no damage. Such old, silver Kurdish belt buckles are rare and are hardly found today.
