Holo, Dem. Rep. of Congo: a large, old helmet or pull-on mask, called ‘Pakasa’, in the form of a buffalo head with curved horns. - Tribal Art

A large buffalo mask of the Holo, from the border region between the Congo and Angola. This helmet mask ‘Pakasa’ was used in dances by a ‘judge’ or peacemaker, if a great altercation broke out in the village. The dancer was supposed to remain anonymous. The buffalo head is carved from hard wood, coloured in black and red, with open mouth and eyes outlined in blue. A fine, visibly old piece, with a small hole on the left side, two minimal holes on the back and slight cracks due to age. Otherwise no damage. Very good, old usage patina on the outside and particularly on the inside of the helmet.
Height: 32 cm; length: 52 cm; width: 35 cm.
First half of the 20th century.

Provenance:
Purchased by the consignor in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bandundu Province, in the village of Mawangu in 1988. Since then: Austrian collection. (ME)
