Scope: 16 x 10 cm; (8) + 398 + (1).

Friedrich Spee von Langenfeld (1591, Kaiserswerth - 1635, Trier) was a German Jesuit and is considered to be an important moral theologian, the greatest lyricist of the early Baroque period and a spiritual writer. He significantly contributed to the end of witch hunts. As a confessor of many victims of the witch trials he was convinced of their innocence and he knew about the atrocities of these trials. His Cautio Criminalis was translated into many languages and his refined argumentation and rhetoric eventually helped to terminate these trials in modern Europe.

Condition: It was rebound (probably in the 19th century) with a paper binding and a leather spine. The binding is slightly frayed and dirty. The book is in good condition.
