On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Germany, in 2015 Tony Cragg was requested to create a sculpture. The steel sculpture ‘Grenze weg’ symbolises the Brandenburg Gate when it was once absolutely unpassable. The nearly closed design of the work clearly expresses the almost complete impenetrability of the triumphal arch for a period of many decades. The mid-section, accentuated by the gap-like opening, contains the glimmer of hope of through-passage and symbolises the new start and breakthrough of the German reunification.

„Sculpture-making processes are enacted in the studio based on ideas, feelings, emotions, moods and gestures. A mixture of method and madness. Most of the time I admit I do not know who is leading, me or the sculpture.“
Tony Cragg, In and Out of Material, Berlin 2006, p. 180
