... Wolfgang Hollegha also makes use of this essential anti-subjective feature with respect to the first generation of the European Art Informel. It is refreshing to consider Hollegha’s paintings from the various phases of his work with that “American look” which between 1958 and 1964 (including Documenta III in Kassel) defined his critical reception. On the other hand this point of view demonstrates that during that time, within an Austrian and European context, Wolfgang Hollegha was the artist whose work desplayed the closest relationship to Abstract Expressionism.
He used the same “dark total ideas”, the same flat pictorial space and nomadic colour. He also transcended the canvases in the same way and demonstrated a new expressiveness. Therein lies one of the great qualities and art-historical dimensions of this work.
