The musicians of the gallant orchestra were created by Johann Joachim Kändler and Friedrich Elias Meyer between 1750 and 1760. The graceful rendering of the solo artists and their instruments give an excellent impression of the 18th century's joy in music. At that time, Meissen artists could already turn to the world-famous Dresden Opera to find live models for their gallant figures. The figure of the orchestra master is based on the singer Domenico Annibale, painted by Anton Mengs in 1734.
