David, first king of Israel-Juda, ca. 1000–970 BCE, and founder of the Jewish dynasty. He built a palace on Zion hill, fortified and enlarged David's city, brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, and proclaimed Salomon, the able son of his lover Bathsheba, to succeed him. He is buried in the royal tombs of Zion. Despite his failings, posterity considered him a 'man after God's heart' and his life served as a prototype for the Jewish and Christian Messiah.
