Figure group,

Figure group, - Works of Art (Furniture, Sculptures, Glass, Porcelain)

Hercules and Hydra, end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th century. Patinated cast bronze figures, fully in the round, depicting Hercules battling with the Hydra, after the marble group by Edmund Hofmann von Aspernburg located on the facade of St Michael’s wing of the Hofburg in Vienna. 170 x 94 x 67 cm. In fine, cared-for condition, with some rubbing. (MIN)

This scene from Greek mythology, represents the 2nd of 12 heroic labours of Hercules, and comes from a fragment found in a manuscript of the 3rd century. A poem on the hero Hercules describes his trials and labours in order to attain immortality. The background to this impressive bronze is the second heroic deed – the Lernaean Hydra, a nine-headed snake, which had been created in order to kill Hercules. However, Hercules attacks the beast by luring it from its lair in a swamp near the lake Lerna. In order to illustrate the predicament and the hero’s battle, 2 of the 9 heads grow again. The Hydra was finally struck with a burning torch and Hercules won the challenge, which brought him closer to immortality.
