Portrait of the landscapist Martin Ryckaert(1587–1631) in Polish costume,
oil on canvas, 112 x 88.5 cm, framed
The present portrait is a scaled-down replica of Van Dyck’s portrait of his colleague Marten Ryckaert in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. It shows the one-armed painter in Polish costume in the self-confident pose of an Eastern European magnate. In addition to an engraving by Jacobus Neeffs, at least five copies of the Madrid painting are known. The present painting may well be one of the examples mentioned in older literature.
