The present painting relates to Batoni’s portrait of the Elector Karl Theodor, in Berchtesgaden Castle, Germany (see: A.M. Clark, Pompeo Batoni, a complete Catalogue of his Works with an Introductory Text, New York 1985, p. 334, ill. no. 344; E.P. Bowron, Pompeo Batoni, a complete catalogue of his paintings, a complete catalogue of his paintings, New Haven/London 2016, p. 487, ill. no. 389). Karl Theodor wears the dark blue uniform with gold braid and red facings of the Palatine Prince’s regiment. On his breast, he wears the star of the Bavarian Order of Saint Hubert, as well as the red moiré sash with narrow green borders.
