Lot No. 266 -

Coenrat Roepel

Coenrat Roepel - Old Master Paintings

(The Hague 1678–1748)
A still life of fruit in front of a stone vase,
oil on canvas, 67 x 51 cm, framed

Provenance:
Formerly in the collection of the Belgian architect Jules Dormal (1846–1924);
Private Collection, South-America

We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for confirming the present painting to be an autograph work by Coenrat Roepel. A copy of the lower half of the composition was sold at Sotheby’s, London, on 20th July 1987 as lot 67 (attributed to W. Sartorius). A compositionally related painting by Roepel was sold at Hampel’s, Munich, in June 2002 as lot 1235. The Lexikon der Holländischen Stilllebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert says about Roepel: “Roepel depicts appealingly arranged flowers and fruit against what may be described as an atmospheric, open backdrop. The combination of floral bouquets and pieces of fruit with stone sculptures, pedestals featuring reliefs of putti, fantastic vases, and architectural elements in the background is entirely characteristic of eighteenth-century painting […].”
