Christian Vogelaar of the Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal, Leiden, has confirmed the present painting to be an autograph work by the Leiden-based marine painter Cornelis Stooter (2nd April 2014). Stooter seems to have been a student of Jan Porcellis, for his rare seascapes with sailing and fishing boats in turbulent waters are reminiscent of the latter’s work.
