Girolamo Forabosco
(Venice 1605–1679 Padova)
Portrait of an elegant Lady,
oil on canvas, 64.1 x 52.4 cm, framed
We are grateful to Ugo Ruggeri for confirming the attribution (written communication).
We are grateful to Bernard Aikema for independently confirming the attribution after examination of the painting in the original.
The present painting can be compared to Forabosco´s portrait of a girl, or “La Menichina“, Rome, Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica di Palazzo Barberini, inv. no. 1493 that had for a long time been considered to be by Alessando Varotari, il Padovanino until it was attributed to Forabosco who was Varotari´s pupil. The present painting is an important example of the Venetian tradition, carrying the stylistic idiom of Titian and his circle well into the 17th century.
