Isaac Fisches
(Augsburg 1638–1706)
The Continence of Scipio,
oil on canvas, 102.9 x 157.5 cm, framed
We are grateful to Peter Königfeld for confirming the authenticity of the present painting.
Besides Johann Heiss and Johann Georg Bergmüller, Isaac Fisches is among the leading exponents of the Augsburg Baroque. Between 1660 and 1674, Fisches worked as a church painter and portraitist for the Count of Maniago and other patrons in Friuli, before he was officially appointed master in Augsburg in 1676. He soon made a name for himself as a portraitist and painter of Christian and mythological subjects. In his paintings, Fisches combined German and Dutch elements of a late Mannerist style with those of contemporary Venetian painting. A clear composition, an organised arrangement of figural groups, a soft, fluid language of form, and a palette dominated by greys and browns and the primary colours of red and blue, are regularly recurring features in his mostly large-scale history paintings.
