This “elegant party” dates from Vrancx’s heyday. Not only does it exhibit characteristic features of his art, but it also reflects general tendencies prevalent in 17th century Flemish art. The artist borrowed a taste for anecdotal detail and figures dressed in colourful costumes from Jan Brueghel the Elder. In the present painting, Vrancx succeeded in inventing an accomplished and dynamic composition populated by protagonists of elegant society. The servant stepping out of the door and facing the spectator with a slightly ironic expression lends the merry scene a moralising touch. The present painting is listed as a work by Sebastiaan Vrancx in the RKD database under number 1001206415.
