A written certificate by Klaus Ertz (May 2016) is available. Ertz states that Jan van Balen painted the figures in the present painting while the landscape and the fruit are by Jan Brueghel II. He dates the painting to the late 1630s. Ertz: “In their chromatic values, the colours typical of both Jan van Balen and Jan Brueghel the Younger speak in favour of this time of execution and are reminiscent of two further paintings of the same subject: the one by Hendrick van Balen (Jan’s father) and Jan Brueghel the Younger from the late 1620s in the Dresden Picture Gallery, which the present painting repeats with only slight variations, and the version signed by Jan van Balen, now in the National Gallery of Stockholm, which dates from the same period.”
