Provenance:
Leopold Alexander Herzig Edler von Herzfeld (1795–1846), Vienna, as of 1840;
Private Collection, Austria.
Exhibited: Art exhibition, Vienna, Junie-July 1840, as “Partie aus dem Garten der Kapuziner zu Albano” [A scene in the garden of the Capuchin Friars of Albano].
Compare:
Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, Hofheim am Taunus 1979, vol. I, 1, p. 283, no. 37, 46, 82.
Ender’s numerous study expeditions took him to Italy, among other countries, where he once again worked for the Prince. Metternich secured a patronage in Italy for both brothers so that Thomas could enable his landscape painting to mature to new heights. The lighting conditions on the Apennine Peninsula were the focus of his studies over the course of numerous trips. Ender’s particular focus lay on realistically reproducing topography as well as introducing an artistic aspect.
