Johann Heinrich Maar war a history and genre painter active in Munich and Nuremberg. He studied under Christoffer Suhr (1771–1842) in Hamburg as well as under Friedrich Rosenberg (1758–1833) at the Academy in Copenhagen. Like his contemporary Heinrich Bürkel, Maar specialised in painting the everyday life of upper-Bavaria and Tyrol (north and south). His paintings are characterised by humoristic details, as we can see in the present work.
