Music and art can be considered the two passions of Ulisse Caputo. Indeed, his most accomplished works are the ones depicting theatre interiors and concerts, showing his great devotion to music, which is the central theme of some of his most famous works.
The encounter with the American Impressionist Richard Miller (1875–1943) was instrumental in persuading Caputo to abandon his sombre palette in favour of a new spectrum of colour. His paintings became brighter with vibrant tones. In the present painting the viewer is placed directly at the table, listening to the piano. The table is set for tea. There is a vase with red flowers. The room is surrounded by orange trees. One of the figures is dreaming, lost in thought, which is typical of the artist’s work.
There exists a composition similar to the present painting, which is illustrated in the book of Maria Antonietta Picone, Un “Italiano di Parigi”: Ulisse Caputo: Salerno 1872-Parigi 1948, p. 140, no 18.
