Italian artist around 1890

Italian artist around 1890 - 19th Century Paintings

A bird’s eye view of the port of Messina,
oil on metal plate, 17 x 23.2 cm, framed, (W)

Messina has always been an important harbour city in Sicily and is named the “Gate of Sicily” due to its proximity to the Italian mainland. The bird’s eye perspective chosen by the artist here shows the typical curve of the harbour with its characteristic lighthouse. This is situated at the so-called Capo Peloro, the cape lying at the northeastern tip of Messina. An alternative name is the Punto del Faro (tip of the lighthouse). The city maintained a lighthouse from as early as the Roman Age. In the Middle Ages, Messina was the seat of two important consulates: the consulate of the sea (consolato del mare), which mediated debates between trade ships, and the consulate of silk traders (consolato della sede). The city was mentioned in the travelogue of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, “Italian Journey” of 1817, which he composed during his stay in Italy.
