Silk dragon robe, - Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries

Tibet, length c. 103, shoulder with sleeve length c. 188 cm, 18th/19th century, made of silk damask with pattern weft threads, figural silk embroidery manufactured with gold and silver threads in appliqué technique, on the grounds of its cut, colours and symbols the present lady’s robe was presumably used in the summer by a female artist or actress, the patterned orange silk fabric is covered in a golden diamond lattice with central swastika, surmounted on either side by three five-clawed dragons, shou-signs and embroidered figures, the diagonal lines representing deep water reach into the lower end of the garment, above which are the classic wave and mountain motifs representing the Chinese cosmic world, especially remarkable are the twelve round medallions with signs of the zodiac in the lower third, two original textile strips for knotting are still preserved on either side, in very good state of preservation without any noticeable signs of wear in the pattern or detached embroidery threads, on the inside green silk lining with several old and new - hardly legible - Chinese inscriptions containing wishes and the name "Xu Jun”.
