South Caucasus, c. 260 x 128 cm, about 1870, an ethnic carpet of the Karabakh region, where the name “cloudband Kazak” was naturalised, the cloud bands refer to the pattern remains of the Caucasian phoenix-dragon motifs of carpets from the 17th and 18th centuries, a further characteristic is the yellow medallion cartouches with swastika shapes - here very archaically rendered, this piece moreover displays an irregular, robust pile wool in bright colours with only minor age-related corrosion and signs of wear, ends and side edges complete and original, in exceptionally good condition overall.
