Luigi Desio, a pair (2)

Luigi Desio, a pair (2) - Old Master Paintings

(active in the 18th Century)
Trompe-l’oeil with a madrigal, landscape engraving and Greek inscription; and
Trompe-l’oeil with a female portrait, landscape engraving and Greek inscription,
oil on paper, laid down on canvas, each 31 x 41 cm, framed (2)

Provenance:
Private collection, Rome

The present works can be compared to a similar composition sold at Finarte in 1991 (sale, Finarte, 19 November 1991, lot 127; see G. Alberti, Inganni dipinti. Trompe-l’oeil nella Fototeca Zeri, Bologna 2015, pp. 103–111). In one of these two pictures appears a passage from a poem, “Donna che si specchia”, by Giovan Battista Marino (Mad. LXXIIII, 1604). The Greek inscription in the paintings refers to the signature on the pedestal of the Hellenistic sculpture by Agasias of Ephesus, once in the Borghese Collection in Rome (now Louvre, Paris), which was rediscovered in 1611. The landscape portions are signed “Perelle”, referring to Gabriel Perelle (Vernon, Eure 1604–1677 Paris).
