Lot No. 4

German School, 17th Century, a pair (2)

German School, 17th Century, a pair (2) - Old Master Paintings

Portraits of Margrave George the Pious of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1484–1543) and Count George Ernest of Henneberg-Schleusingen (1511–1583),
oil on panel, each 20 x 14 cm, framed (2)

These two portraits come with a certificate issued by Helmut Börsch-Supan. He dates them into the period around 1600 and believes that they originally belonged to a comprehensive series of small portraits of princes that were exceptionally popular in Central Germany around 1600.

George of Ansbach ruled as margrave from 1527 onwards. As a friend of Martin Luther, he was one of the most influential personalities in the implementation of the Reformation. Count of Henneberg, the last member of his line, committed himself to the reform of the church and of schooling in his county.
